Self-Editing Guidelines for Beginning or First Time Writers

September 2nd, 2011 . by admin

Are you a first time writer? Well, everyone who is a famous author was at one point of time, a first time writer. They have all learnt from experience and emulating others at some point of time. Undoubtedly experience teaches us a lot of things. However, emulating established writers is a very good way of learning. In fact emulating is a good way of learning in any field.

Lets take a look at some tips that beginner writers will find useful. One rule of thumb to follow is always keep the audience in mind when writing. Remember, it is the audience who will be reading your article or book or blog or whatever it is you are writing. Think about what audience would like to read and appreciate. Your own perspective and views and preferences don’t matter as much as the readers’ views and choices. Your writing should offer them something and would want them to come back and read more of what you have to say. If you are telling a story, don’t think from your perspective. Think about what part of your story would reader want to read about and would be interested in.

Lets look at some of the other basic writing rules. Don’t start a sentence with “and’. Don’t use long sentences that keep rolling on and on. Keep the sentence precise and to the point. Offer something with each and every paragraph. Start the first paragraph with a bang and end with another bang. When the reader reads the first sentence, they should want to read more.

Find a way to highlight the important aspects of your writing with either a quote or a bullet or any other form appropriate for your writing piece. Most importantly, spell check. You don’t want to have grammatical or spelling mistakes.
